Effective January 1, 2016, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration lowered the number of random drug tests commercial motor carriers are required to conduct.
Previously, motor carriers were required to test 50 percent of the average number of driver positions. For 2016, the FMCSA reduced the rate to 25 percent.
The agency reduced the rate because positive random tests for controlled substances fell below one percent for three consecutive years. The minimum annual percentage rate for random alcohol testing has not changed, it will remain at 10 percent.
The agency estimates the lowered rates could save motor carriers $50 million a year.
